Our July BFree Foodie of the Month is someone a bit different—the first to take the spotlight not for their own gluten avoidance, but for their partner’s!
Meet Adam Ball, MasterChef quarter-finalist whose love of cooking revolves around his coeliac wife. She inspires his gluten free supper clubs, and we loved hearing Adam’s heartfelt answers and obvious passion for cooking and caring for his partner and the new-found friends who join his regular supper club events.
Discover more about what a supper club is and book tickets to his next one at @what_is_adam_cooking. It’s entirely gluten free!
🟢 BFree Foodie Name & Age:
Adam Ball, 36
🟢 City:
Bristol, UK
🟢 Diagnosis:
It’s not actually me who has the intolerance, it’s my wife. She was diagnosed around four years ago, so that’s when I started to make her delicious gluten-free food.
🟢 Bio:
I started off as a home cook who just enjoyed cooking. Then, I applied for MasterChef, and life changed completely. My love of cooking has always been centred around feeding my coeliac wife, ensuring she gets to eat the best food without fear of cross-contamination.
I never want my wife to feel like she’s missing out on food. I think that’s why my cooking style varies so much; I cook everything so she doesn’t have to miss out.
🟢 Favourite BFree Product:
My favourite product is definitely the pitas. We love to eat them filled with spicy pork and feta salads.
🟢 Go-to Recipe:
It has to be my fried chicken and waffles. We have them regularly, and they really do hit the spot. It’s our favourite Friday or Saturday night treat.
🟢 Passion:
My passion has always been cooking. I love to make people happy with food. Initially, it started with family and friends, and now it has extended ten-fold to people I don’t know but want to get to know. I love supper clubs—being in the kitchen while hearing the buzz of the room is amazing. It is something I can see myself doing for a long time, until I finally take the jump and open my own place. It goes without saying, but all my supper clubs are completely gluten-free. For my events, there’s nothing on the menu that contains gluten, so there is no risk of contamination whatsoever.
🟢 Favourite GF Restaurant:
I have to say my gluten-free monthly supper club. I host at least one a month at a different venue each time, which I base the menu around. Recently I hosted a BBQ supper club where I grilled big joints of meat in the kitchen on my own BBQ.
🟢 Supper Club? What’s that?
For me, a supper club is a brilliant way to showcase a menu that you love. The thing I love about supper clubs is that you can change the venue and menu whenever you like. I have done seven supper clubs now, and each one has been different. I have done Spanish menus, classic British, and Italian. My signature dish is a zeppole—an Italian doughnut. I have made a variety of different ones, from starters (pesto, whipped lemon ricotta, and prosciutto) to dessert ones (tiramisu, salted caramel, and coffee crème pâtissière).
I love that everybody sits at one big table; by the end of the evening, I enjoy watching people all chatting and having a good time. My next supper club is bookable via my Instagram page or Eventbrite. Follow me to keep up to date on all my pop-ups and supper clubs.
🟢 Sounds Amazing—When is your next one?
Glad you asked! The next one is Frankie’s Fried Chicken pop up, which will be hosted at Kongs in Bristol on the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th of July.
Who doesn’t love a bit of sweet and savoury these days? My fried chicken pop-up is just that. The menu includes a gluten free fluffy waffle topped with fried chicken. There’s all different flavour options, from buffalo sauce and blue cheese, and maple bacon with bacon butter and chilli jam—to the more adventurous flavours like nacho cheese chicken and parmigiana chicken with a punchy pesto. I love creating new flavours all the time and will eventually open a place with monthly specials.
I also have Frickles and million-layered potatoes on the menu, which sell out very quickly as I do them both as a limited item.
🟢 Best Life Tip:
My best tip is to always cook fresh and use great gluten free products like BFree. I love that there are big brands out there helping people not miss out.
